What's so shocking?
The unique experience of eating the flowers from the paracress plant is summed up best by a quote from Keith Dusko when talking with NPR: The feeling is "a little north of Pop Rocks, and south of putting a 9-volt battery in your mouth." Most people agree that it is a pleasurable experience and well worth repeating.
What's it called?
These little flowers come from a plant called a paracress plant. Scientifically, it's called Acmella oleracea. For decades, it's been known as the toothache tree because people would eat a flower bud to relieve pain from a toothache. Recently, some companies gave this little flower their own names. We've seen these called Sechuan Buttons, Sansho Buttons, Electric Buttons, and the Eyeball Plant. We simply call them Shocking Flowers!
What are they used for?
Just like Miracle Fruit, the paracress plant has many uses. The culinary world is beginning to integrate the flower into drinks and sorbets. A light dusting around the rim of a glass of champange or your favorit cocktail will give your dinner party a whole new twist. Sprinkeled over meats and fish, Shocking Flowers will add a delightful element to your meal. Medically, the plant is used in organic TENS lotions and was a remedy for toothaches many years ago.
The bottom line is that this flower can be the next hit of your party. It's a fun experiment to try. But quite possibly, it's even more fun to watch your friends enjoy the experience!
